Table Tennis Buying Guide

Table tennis also know as Ping Pong originated in England in the 1880s as an after-dinner amusement for upper-class Victorians. It evolved into the modern game that is extremely popular all over the world. The game is controlled by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), founded in 1926.

The game is played on a 9 ft × 5 ft × 30 inches high playing surface. The International Table Tennis Federation requires an area not less than 14 m long, 7 m wide and 5 m high for competitions. The great thing about this sport is that it easily fits in most homes.

Playing Surface/Top

The bounce quality varies according to the top. The thicker, the denser, and/or the harder the board, the higher and more uniform the bounce will be as there is a direct relationship between the thickness/density/hardness of the board and the quality of the bounce.

Frames

The playing surface sits on a frame, which varies in thickness from 35mm to 80mm. The frame increases the rigidity and the flatness of the board, so a thicker frame will produce a flatter board. All Cornilleau tables have a frame manufactured from steel alloy, zinc and aluminium for the best in corrosion resistance.

Coating

The MATTOP anti-glare coating is 10 times less reflective than standard tops. These tables also have an improved spin effect.

Tables with a SOFTMAT Top anti-glare coating reflect 3 times fewer rays than standard tops.

The SKILTOP playing surface is used on Cornilleau’s Competition range. This is a quality treatment to create strong table tops with a high-quality, long-lasting surface that ensures a reliable and regular bounce.

Leg Levellers

The leg assembly determines the stability of the table so broader legs are more stable. Some tables are supplied with leg levellers which allow for adjustment on uneven ground. Most tables have been designed for wheelchair play.

Wheels

The wheels assist you in moving the table and must stand up to resistance. Larger diameter wheels enable the table to roll easily whilst brakes provide greater stability. Outdoor tables have notched wheels to make movement over rough ground easier.

Net & Post Set

Cornilleau use either steel or ABS for their net posts and cotton or polypropylene for the nets. Cornilleau tables are always supplied with a permanently mounted net and posts set and most have some adjustment for the height and tension of the net.
